Snuggled in her pyjamas, Lucy sighed into the darkness. She’d forgotten to go to the toilet and, suddenly having remembered, it was now all she could think about. She fought the urge to go for as long as she could, but it was no use. She was going to have to remove herself from the warm little nest she’d made.

Lucy walked along the corridor to the bathroom, but light shone from the crack under the closed door. Lucy bounced from one foot to the other. One minute passed, then two, then three, before she sighed and tiptoed her way down the stairs. She had no clue where any of the light switches were, so she felt her way down each step and along the walls until she was in the basement.

Lucy walked tentatively across the room and found herself in front of the three doors. She racked her brain. Which one was the bathroom?

Creak!

Lucy turned around slowly, but she couldn’t see anything through the darkness. Another creak.

Pulling open the door closest to her, she fumbled for the light. Hobo’s gran had warned them of a monster. And something was definitely in the darkness.

Lucy found the switch. She could see, but there was no bathroom.

The skull of a horse, with its mouth wide open, red ears and large bulging eyes, shot out towards her. A small giggle echoed in the darkness behind her.

Lucy screamed and scrambled backwards. Straight into something else, something that grabbed her.

‘Lucy, Lucy, calm down. It’s me, it’s Hobo!’ Hobo flicked the switch on the wall next to the cupboard, illuminating the basement.

‘That’s no monster, Lucy,’ Hobo started to explain. ‘That’s the Mari Lwyd.’

‘What’s all this noise?’ Hobo’s gran said, the basement steps creaking as she strode quickly down them, with Hobo’s grandad at her heels.

‘It’s th— the Marry Lloyd?’ Lucy stammered, her heart still racing.

‘The Mari Lwyd,’ Hobo repeated, before he burst out laughing.

‘Ahh, you’ve found my little friend, have you?’ Hobo’s grandad said.

Lucy nodded her head as he pulled out what looked like a terrifying version of the hobby horse. The horse was wrapped in a white sheet, its pole hidden beneath, and was decorated with colourful reins, bells and ribbons.

‘Yes, the Mari Lwyd, or Y Fari Lwyd as us Welsh like to call her,’ Hobo’s grandad explained. ‘Old Mari here is said to bring good luck, though we’ve not had much of that have we, Vic?’

Hobo’s gran shook her head. ‘No, and I doubt she’s going to start bringing luck just because she’s out. Let’s put her back where she came from. I don’t know why old Stan left the Mari to you, all she’s useful for is cluttering up my cupboard,’ she declared with a slight shudder.

Hobo’s grandad leaned the Mari up against the wall in the cupboard and sighed. ‘I really don’t know either.’
